Review of Sukhothai Restaurant in Leeds (Chapel Allerton)

Sukhothai Restaurant in Leeds (Chapel Allerton)

3 cheers for Ban, head chef and owner of the exceptional Sukhothai Restaurant in Leeds, who continues to produce some of the best Thai food available in Leeds and possibly even the UK! The creation of this restaurant has been a personal journey for this talented chef, and this is reflected in the name ‘Sukhothai’, the name of his birthplace. Meaning ‘Dawn of Happiness’, Ban ensures that all his guests enjoy the happiness that comes from eating authentically cooked Thai food, in warm, convivial surroundings. Modern chic effortlessly blends with traditional artifacts creating an earthy, chilled out environment perfect for a romantic meal or family celebration.

The staff are absolutely wonderful and consistently go out of their way to give everyone care and attention. Knowledgeable about Thai cuisine, they can also assist in making selections from the slightly daunting menu. As with many Thai restaurants in Leeds there is a vast range of delicacies to choose from, including light bites, curries, soups and meat and seafood mains. Always a popular choice the poh piah tod, are Thai-style spring rolls with minced chicken, bean thread noodles and vegetables served with a sweet, chilli sauce. The satay gung, marinated tiger prawns, grilled and served with ground peanut sauce are moreishly good, while the sai oua, Thai pork sausage has an intense chilli bite.

Of course the menu contains many familiar dishes such as Thai green curry and pad Thai, but it is the inclusion of many unusual dishes that make this menu so exciting. The pla yang, a whole sea bass rubbed with fresh chilli, lime leaves and lemon grass before being wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled, comes highly recommended. Light and refreshing it has the beautiful flavours of citrus with a slight hint of heat. Any diner searching for restaurants in Leeds that offer the magical combination of great food with first-class service need look no further. With a range of menus including a lighter lunch menu and set dinner menu, as well as excellent vegetarian options Sukhothai restaurant in Leeds is on track bringing diners happiness.
